Developing a framework for regional destination adaptation to climate change

Objectives

As the tourism sector is vulnerable to climate change, this paper set out to assess how regional tourist destinations should adapt to climate change. A further aim was to create a framework for regional tourist destination adaptation to climate change.

Key words

climate change; adaptation framework; regional tourism destinations; vulnerability; resilience

Key findings (Dot points)

The framework for regional adaptation to climate change has three components.

    • assess the vulnerability and resilience of the destination – this means working out who are the tourism stakeholders, what particular climate change risks and opportunities the destination is facing, and determining which factors in the destination will help adaptation, and which will be barriers to adaptation.
    • increase the resilience of the destination - by working out which adaptation options can be put into place, and therefore decreasing the risk to the destination. This includes working out how the current and future tourist markets will react to the adaptation measures, and to the changes in climate
    • increase readiness – by capitalising on the opportunities that climate change may bring

Implications for Practice (Dot points)

  • Destination managers need to be involved in all three components – assessing vulnerability and resilience, increasing resilience and increasing readiness
  • Destinations managers can use this framework to guide their climate change planning and increase their levels of preparedness
