International Visitors in Australia: September 2012 Quarterly Results of the International Visitor Survey

Key Findings

All visitors - Year ended 30 September 2012

A person is an international visitor when they travel from overseas to Australia and stay for a period of less than twelve months.


Total international visitors

    • There were 5.6 million international visitors to Australia, an increase of 3% compared to the year ending September 2011.

Visitor nights

    • International visitors spent 203 million nights in Australia, up 6% compared to the year ending September 2011.


    • New Zealand was the largest source of visitors (1,090,896), followed by the China (573,071), United Kingdom (558,149) and USA (443,256).

State/territory visits

    • Over half of international visitors visited New South Wales (51%), followed by Queensland (35%) and Victoria (32%).

State/territory visitor nights

    • International visitors spent a third of their nights in New South Wales (33%), followed by Victoria (22%) and Queensland (21%).


    • The majority of international visitors arrived in Australia on a holiday (44%), followed by those visiting friends and relatives (25%), and those travelling for business (16%).


    • Most international visitors were on a return trip to Australia (63%).


    • Inclusive package travellers accounted for 14% of international visitors, while group tour travellers accounted for 8% of international visitors.


    • International visitors spent a total of $18.7 billion, an increase of 4% compared to the year ending September 2011. The average spend per international visitor trip was $3,341.
