Unless we say otherwise, we compared the summary results for:

  • the March quarter 2024 to the March quarter 2023
  • the year ending March 2024 to the year ending March 2023.

Domestic trips and spend key results

March quarter 2024

Domestic tourism growth continued to stabilise in the March quarter 2024. Compared to the March quarter 2023:

  • spend was on par
  • domestic overnight trips were up 2% or 449,000
  • nights away were down 1% or 1.3 million.

Travel to capital cities recorded strong results in March quarter 2024 compared to March quarter 2023. Comparatively, travel to regional areas was softer. 

Year ending March 2024

The year ending March 2024 saw similar results when compared to year ending March 2023. In the year ending March 2024:

  • spend was up by 1% or $1.3 billion to $109.4 billion
  • overnight trips were up 1% or 1.1 million to 113.0 million
  • nights away were down 2% or 8.2 million to 401.2 million.
