Unless we say otherwise, we compared the summary results for:

  • the September quarter 2024 to the September  quarter 2023
  • the year ending September 2024 to the year ending September 2023.

Domestic trips and spend key results

September quarter 2024

Domestic tourism remained stable in the September quarter 2024. Compared to the September quarter 2023:

  • spend was up 1% or $396 million
  • domestic overnight trips were up 3% or 790,000
  • nights away were down 2% or 2.5 million.

Travel for business purposes and to capital cities was strong in the September quarter 2024. However, this was offset by weaker travel for holidays and to regional areas. 

Year ending September 2024

The year ending September 2024 saw similar results when compared to year ending September 2023. In the year ending September 2024:

  • spend was up by 1% or $1.6 billion to $110.3 billion
  • overnight trips were up 3% or 2.9 million to 114.5 million
  • nights away were down 1% or 5.5 million to 397.4 million.
