Domestic trips and spend key results

Year ending June 2022

  • Domestic overnight trips fell 24% to 85.8 million.
  • Spend fell 11% or $8.4 billion to $69.0 billion.
  • Widespread lockdowns from July 2021 onwards are included in the year ending June 2022. Travel restrictions from that time had a great impact on interstate movement.
    • Interstate trips were down 45% to 19.8 million. Spend was down 32% to $28.8 billion.
    • Intrastate trips were down 14% to 66.0 million. Spend was up 15% to $40.3 billion.
  • Regional areas continued to fare better than capital cities over the year.
    • Overnight trips to regional Australia were down 16% to 59.6 million. Spend was up 6% to $47.7 billion.
    • Capital city overnight trips were down 37% to 29.7 million. Spend was down 29% to $29.1 billion.

June quarter 2022

Domestic tourism continued to recover from pre-pandemic levels. This was supported by the Easter holiday period and school holidays.

  • Domestic overnight trips decreased by 6% to 28.3 million.
  • Spend increased by 29% or $5.7 billion to $25.3 billion.

Spend recovery was driven by an increase in spend on:

  • Accommodation ─ up 48% or $2.4 billion
  • Eating out ─ up 38% or $1.7 billion
  • Petrol ─ up 21% or $465 million
  • Shopping ─ up 33% or $448 million.

Increased spending on holidays also contributed to the strong performance of the quarter. Holiday spend increased by 60% or $5.2 billion from the June quarter 2019. This is the biggest increase since the start of the pandemic.
