  • Spend in Australia is different to total spend. Total spend includes purchases made overseas such as international airfares and package tours.

International visitation to Australia continues to recover, with 3.4 million trips to Australia in the year ending December 2022.

The top 3 main reasons for travel to Australia in the year ending December 2022 were:

  • Visiting friends and relatives with 1.6 million trips.
    • This is 62% of pre-COVID levels.
    • Total spend was $6.2 billion, 82% of pre-COVID levels.
  • Holiday travel with 941,000 trips.
    • This was 23% of pre-COVID levels.
    • Total spend was $4.6 billion, 27% of pre-COVID levels.
  • Business travel with 409,000 trips.
    • This was 40% of pre-COVID levels.
    • Total spend was $2.3 billion, 56% of pre-COVID levels.

Top 5 international visitor markets

India and Singapore retain their positions in the top 5 international markets.

Australia’s top 5 international markets for the year ending December 2022 were:

  • New Zealand with 632,000 trips.
    • This is 49% of pre-COVID levels.
    • Total spend was $1.7 billion, 63% of pre-COVID levels.
  • United Kingdom with 370,000 trips.
    • This is 55% of pre-COVID levels.
    • Total spend was $2.2 billion, 65% of pre-COVID levels.
  • USA with 300,000 trips.
    • This is 39% of pre-COVID levels.
    • Total spend was $1.9 billion, 49% of pre-COVID levels.
  • India with 291,000 trips.
    • This is 77% of pre-COVID levels, the fastest recovering international market.
    • Total spend was $1.6 billion, 89% of pre-COVID levels.
  • Singapore with 255,000 trips.
    • This is 61% of pre-COVID levels.
    • Total spend was $1.1 billion, 73% of pre-COVID levels.
